Australian Birds of Prey: The Biology and Ecology of Raptors

Australian Birds of Prey: The Biology and Ecology of Raptors
de Penny Olsen, CSIRO Division of Wildlife and Ecology(Ed. UNSW Press) Isbn : 0868400394
38.42 €
Too bad for those who think that this fine title has too narrow a focus. Olsen (Australian National Univ.) covers the raptors of Australia very well but deals primarily with universal subjects even as she draws mainly from examples of that continent. General chapters concern raptor basics, ecology, predation, reproduction, health, study methods, interactions with humans, and conservation. An attractive format with elegant charts and tables as well as 250 spectacular color photos combine to make this a stunning monograph, well referenced and authoritative. Because its focus is more cosmopolitan, Scott Weidensaul's Raptors (LJ 3/15/96) is a better selection for most general libraries, but larger institutions should also acquire Olsen's marvelous, large-format book. It is a beauty.Henry Tucke...

For Beauty of the Earth: Birding, Opera and Other Journeys

For Beauty of the Earth: Birding, Opera and Other Journeys
de Thomas Urquhart(Ed. Shoemaker Hoard, Div of Avalon Publishing Group ) Isbn : 1593760175
24.7 €
Today, when most personal memoirs involve misery and dysfunction, it is exhilarating to encounter a life of modesty, happiness, and stability. Often when thinking of nature writers and naturalists, the image of a rough-hewn rural, rugged outdoor type wrestled into epiphany by the arms of Mother Nature comes to mind. Thomas Urquhart found a different path. He combined a classical education with a lifelong passion for opera, literature and art, but from his earliest days he was a devoted amateur naturalist. For the Beauty of the Earth begins with the lives of Urquhart's ancestors, among them his grandmother,«a patron saint of lost causes»who cherished her signed photo of Robert E. Lee and his great aunt Catharine, arrested while protesting what she considered the judicial murder of Sacco and...

Thomas Urquhart found a different path. He combined a classical education with a lifelong passion for opera, literature, and art. And from his earliest days he is a devoted, devotedly amateur naturalist.
